As of September 1, 2017, the product bar code, indicated in the electronic tax documents (NF-e and NFC-e), must meet the GTIN standard.

GTIN is a bar code that identifies business items, developed and controlled by GS1 Brazil - Brazilian Automation Association, a company legally responsible for the licensing of its respective bar code in Brazil.

That is, this new rule reaches only the companies that use the GTIN bar code standard, which in case of non-compliance of the information contained in the register, the NF-e and NFC-e will be rejected.

Companies that do not use the bar code in their tax documents should not fill in this information.

The legislation also established a timetable for the implementation of this new obligation, which is now valid according to the field of activity of the companies, as follows:

I - CNAE 324 group, as of September 1, 2017;

II - CNAE group 121 to 122, as of October 1, 2017;
